The Physiology and Physics of Reiki: Working With the Body’s Natural Healing Systems

Reiki and other energy-based therapies work with the body’s electromagnetic fields and are grounded in established
principles of physics and physiology.

Reiki sessions at Instinctive Wellness integrate energy therapy with clinical intuition, and when appropriate, functional medicine, to support whole-person healing.

Reiki Therapy

Reiki is a biofield-based therapy that works with the body’s electromagnetic and regulatory systems and is grounded in established principles of physics, physiology, and neurobiology.

Human beings are electromagnetic organisms. The heart, brain, and nervous system generate measurable electromagnetic fields that coordinate cellular communication, tissue repair, immune signaling, and autonomic regulation. Research in biofield science has demonstrated that trained practitioners emit coherent electromagnetic signals from the hands that interact with biological systems.

Laboratory and clinical studies have documented measurable biofield effects, including changes in cellular behavior in tissue culture models (including bone, tendon, nerve, and connective tissue cells), modulation of stress and immune markers such as cortisol and salivary IgA, and improvements in autonomic nervous system regulation as reflected in heart rate variability and EKG patterns. Clinical settings have also documented shortened hospital stays, reduced postoperative pain medication requirements, and improved recovery trajectories in select populations.

In Deb’s practice, Reiki is further informed by clinical intuition and pattern recognition developed over decades of healthcare experience. This intuitive awareness is not used to diagnose conditions or replace medical evaluation. Instead, it helps identify areas of physiological stress, nervous system dysregulation, or retained trauma patterns that may benefit from additional support.

The Benefits of Reiki

The paramount advantage of Reiki lies in its ability to induce profound relaxation. When you allow yourself to genuinely slow down, the body and mind undergo a rejuvenating process.

Scientific studies now shed light on the detrimental effects of stress on the body. Persistent stress leads to inflammation, an underlying factor in conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, and various autoimmune diseases. Stress reduction and relaxation emerge as pivotal elements in maintaining overall well-being.

Beyond relaxation, Reiki sessions often support nervous system regulation. When the nervous system shifts into a regulated, parasympathetic state, the body initiates a cascade of restorative biochemical processes. One key mechanism is the release of nitric oxide, a signaling molecule essential for vascular relaxation, tissue perfusion, immune modulation, and cellular repair. Nitric oxide supports mitochondrial and endothelial function, reduces inflammatory signaling, and plays a critical role in the body’s ability to heal.

By facilitating nervous system down-regulation, Reiki helps create the internal conditions that allow these restorative processes to occur more effectively When the body shifts into a calmer, more regulated state, it becomes easier to process emotional stress, restore balance, and engage the body’s inherent healing mechanisms. Intuitive awareness during sessions can help identify which areas of the system may benefit most from support, allowing the session to be more responsive and individualized.

Clinical experience and research have documented that Reiki and related biofield therapies may support healing and recovery in a number of measurable ways.

Reported benefits include:

  • Alleviating Pain
  • Accelerating Wound and Injury Recovery
  • Easing Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD
  • Enhancing Sleep Quality
  • Lowering Blood Pressure
  • Improving Anemia and Cortisol Levels
  • Boosting Energy Levels
  • Improving Mental Clarity
  • Shortening Hospital Stays
  • Easing Agitation from Cognitive Decline
  • Easing the transition at End of Life

Reiki can also be profoundly supportive during serious illness, decline, and end-of-life transitions. In these moments, the focus is not on curing, but on comfort, regulation, and easing the body and nervous system through natural processes of letting go. Many individuals and families find that energy-based support during this time brings a sense of peace, coherence, and connection that is difficult to access through conventional care alone.

Getting a Reiki Treatment

When you opt for an in-person Reiki session, the practice typically involves the gentle “laying on” of hands or working in the energetic field surrounding the body. This means that the Reiki practitioner may delicately place their hands on various points of your body if you are comfortable with touch. It’s important to note that there is no intimate contact involved in Reiki.

During sessions, Deb may notice intuitive impressions related to areas of altered or reduced electromagnetic coherence, areas where trauma may be held in the body, as well as emotional or spiritual themes that may be influencing overall well-being. These insights are offered gently and only when relevant, and are always integrated with the client’s own lived experience and personal intuition. The intention is to support nervous system regulation and the body’s own capacity to heal, never to override or impose meaning beyond what resonates for the individual.

During the session, you remain fully clothed, lying on a comfortable Reiki table supported with pillows and blankets tailored to your preferences.

While session durations may vary, the average Reiki session lasts about 45 minutes. Clients consistently express a heightened sense of relaxation during the session, with many even drifting into a peaceful sleep.

Your only task is to recline, unwind, and embrace the rejuvenating benefits!

Safety and Integration with Medical Care

Reiki is a non-invasive, complementary therapy that can be safely integrated alongside conventional medical treatments. It does not interfere with medications, medical devices, or procedures, and there are no known adverse side effects associated with Reiki when practiced appropriately.

Reiki does not diagnose, treat, or replace medical care. Instead, it supports the physiological conditions that allow healing to occur more effectively, including nervous system regulation, improved circulation, and reduced stress signaling. Many individuals choose to receive Reiki alongside medical care to support comfort, recovery, and overall well-being.

Pricing

Reiki Therapy is not covered under insurance, however it is eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA) or a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA).

Reiki Level I: One Foundation, Two Pathways to Learn

Reiki Level I has a shared purpose: to establish a solid, ethical foundation for working with Reiki energy. To meet students where they are, this training is offered through two distinct pathways, each leading to the same Level I certification.

Both options confer Usui Reiki Ryōhō — Reiki Level I certification, while differing in class size, instructional depth, and teaching context.

How to Choose Your Reiki Level I Pathway

People come to Reiki for different reasons. Some are curious about energy healing and want a structured, academic introduction. Others already live with heightened sensitivity, intuitive perception, or empathic awareness — and are seeking tools to work sustainably, ethically, and without depletion.

If you are primarily exploring Reiki out of curiosity or general interest, the Traditional Reiki Level I course may be the right fit.

If you already experience energy, heightened sensitivities or intuition as something you actively navigate in daily life,
the Empath & Soul Weaver Reiki Level I pathway is designed for you.

Empath & Soul Weaver Reiki Level I

For empaths and intuitives seeking a sustainable, trauma-aware Reiki practice

Who this pathway is for
This Reiki training pathway is designed for empaths, highly sensitive individuals, caregivers, clinicians, and intuitive practitioners who already experience the world through heightened emotional, energetic, or nervous system awareness. It is intended for those who are seeking grounded, ethical ways to work with energy without burnout, depletion, or self-erasure by mastering energetic boundaries and intention.

Teaching focus and approach
Taught through Instinctive Wellness, this pathway reflects Deb’s personal teaching style, clinical background, and decades of experience working at the intersection of energy, trauma, physiology, and intuition. Classes emphasize energetic and emotional boundaries, nervous system regulation, trauma-aware Reiki practice, ethical intuitive development, and understanding how the body stores and processes experience across physical, emotional, mental, and energetic layers. Rather than teaching Reiki as techniques alone, this pathway focuses on integration and sustainability.

Certification
Students who complete this pathway receive a certificate in Usui Reiki Ryōhō — Reiki Level I. In addition to meeting the requirements of Reiki Level I, this training integrates elements of Usui’s original teachings alongside a trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware approach to Reiki practice. The Empath & Soul Weaver designation refers to the method of teaching and integration, not a separate Reiki system or certification.

Class format
This class is held over two consecutive days on a weekend.

Tuition
$275 per person
Class size is limited to 6 participants

Scheduling
Empath & Soul Weaver Reiki trainings are scheduled independently and are listed on the Reiki Calendar

Reiki Practitioner Level II – Usui Reiki Ryōhō

A Reiki Practitioner Level II class is an advanced training that deepens and expands upon the foundations established in Reiki Level I.

Students are welcome to enroll in Reiki Level II regardless of where they completed their Reiki Level I training, provided they hold a Usui Reiki Ryōhō Level I certification. Reiki Level II takes participants further into the energetic, emotional, and intuitive dimensions of practice, offering greater nuance, skill, and discernment.

Key components of the Reiki Practitioner Level II class include:

Symbolic Mastery
Students are introduced to the sacred Reiki symbols used in Level II practice. These symbols support more focused intention, expanded energetic range, and deeper engagement with Reiki energy, enhancing the practitioner’s ability to channel and direct healing effectively.

Distance Healing Techniques
A core element of Level II involves learning methods for offering Reiki across distance. Students explore how intention, symbols, and energetic connection transcend physical space, allowing Reiki to be offered to individuals, situations, or periods of time remotely.

Chakra Dynamics and Soul-Level Integration
This level introduces a deeper exploration of how Reiki interacts with emotional, mental, and energetic patterning. Students learn to recognize how chakra activity and energetic flow relate to emotional patterns, personality traits, stress responses, and coping mechanisms, as well as how these patterns shift in response to life stress, trauma, developmental stages, and healing processes. Training emphasizes working with energetic patterns skillfully and ethically, supporting regulation and integration without over-identification, projection, or energetic overreach.

At this stage, Reiki practice may also begin to engage a deeper layer of integration often described as the soul. In this training, soul-level work is approached not as belief or spiritual identity, but as the integration of meaning, experience, and embodied awareness. Students learn to recognize when energetic patterns reflect fragmentation, unresolved experience, or loss of internal continuity, and how Reiki can support reconnection gently and respectfully. This work emphasizes humility, consent, and discernment, helping practitioners remain grounded while engaging with deeper layers of healing and transformation.

Practical Experience
Students engage in guided, hands-on practice to refine their use of symbols, distance techniques, and intuitive perception. Practice sessions emphasize ethical application, energetic consent, and grounded integration of insight with lived experience.

Ethics, Boundaries, and Professional Responsibility
Level II places continued emphasis on ethical practice, including energetic boundaries, client autonomy, confidentiality, and professional conduct.

Attunement
As with Level I, Reiki Level II includes an attunement process that supports deeper connection to Reiki energy and the frequencies associated with the Level II symbols.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive Usui Reiki Ryōhō — Reiki Level II certification.

Class structure
The Reiki Practitioner Level II class is held over two consecutive days on a weekend.

Tuition
$375 per person
Class size is limited to 6 participants to support individualized instruction and guided practice.

Reiki Master Training – Usui Reiki Ryōhō

Reiki Master Training represents the culmination of formal Reiki education and a transition into mature, self-directed practice. While Reiki Level I introduces the foundational framework and Reiki Level II deepens fluency within that structure, the Master level invites practitioners to recognize that the framework itself is not the destination. This training is designed for those who seek not only to deepen technical skill, but to embody Reiki as a living, responsive practice rooted in presence, coherence, discernment, ethics, and responsibility. The year-long training is also a process of self-discovery, emphasizing ongoing self-assessment, reflection, and the cultivation of a clear, ethical relationship with energy and personal boundaries. Reiki Master Training is not about transcending structure, but about understanding when structure serves, and when presence, discernment, and responsiveness must lead, honoring both tradition and the uniqueness of each moment.

Students are welcome to enter Reiki Master Training regardless of where they completed their Reiki Level I and II training, provided they hold recognized Usui Reiki Ryōhō Level I and II certifications and demonstrate readiness for advanced study.

Key elements of Reiki Master Training include:

Master Symbol and Attunement
Students are introduced to the Reiki Master symbol and receive the Master attunement. This process supports deeper energetic integration and a more refined relationship with Reiki energy, emphasizing responsibility and stewardship rather than authority.

Teaching Reiki to Others
Reiki Master Training includes preparation for teaching and attuning others to Reiki. Students learn how to teach Reiki responsibly, support diverse learners, and guide others through attunement and practice with clarity, humility, and high ethical standards. Instruction emphasizes that teaching Reiki is not about replication or control, but about supporting each student’s relationship with the practice as it naturally unfolds.

Advanced Energetic Perception and Discernment
Students refine their capacity for subtle perception, including energy scanning, intuitive awareness, and pattern recognition. At the Master level, these skills expand perception and intuitive awareness, providing richer information while remaining ethically held, non-intrusive, and always in service of the recipient’s autonomy.

Soul-Level Integration, Coherence, and Presence
Master-level Reiki work engages the deepest layers of human experience, including meaning, coherence, identity, and transition. In this training, soul-level work is understood as the capacity to remain present with complexity, ambiguity, and change, supporting coherence without imposing narrative, outcome, or belief. Students learn to recognize when energetic patterns reflect fragmentation or major life transitions and to hold space for these processes with steadiness, consent, and humility, accompanying others through profound experiences without attachment to fixing, rescuing, or resolution.

Integration of Personal Mastery
Rather than striving toward a fixed ideal, Master-level training emphasizes self-trust, regulation, and ongoing integration. Students explore how Reiki lives within their own bodies, relationships, and life contexts, allowing the practice to become adaptive, responsive, and sustainable.

Practical Teaching Experience
Students engage in supervised practice teaching, attunement, and mentorship. This experiential component supports confidence, clarity, and the ability to guide others responsibly while remaining grounded in one’s own limits and learning edges.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive Usui Reiki Ryōhō — Reiki Master certification, recognizing readiness to teach, attune, and steward the Reiki lineage with integrity.

Class structure
Reiki Master Training is a year-long program with monthly training sessions, allowing for integration, reflection, and embodied learning over time.

Tuition
$2,000 per person
Class size is limited to 3 participants to support depth, mentorship, and individualized guidance.
Payment arrangements may be made for the Reiki Master Training program.

Reiki Shares

For those already trained in Reiki or other energy-based healing practices, Reiki Shares are offered twice each month as opportunities for practice, connection, and community learning.

On the 3rd Sunday of each month, participants typically gather for a traditional Reiki Share, offering and receiving energy work in a supportive, collegial setting. On the 1st Saturday of each month, an Equine Reiki Share is held at a local horse stable, where practitioners offer energy work to horses in a calm, respectful environment.

Because scheduling may occasionally shift due to space availability at the church or stables, participants are encouraged to reference the current calendar for confirmed dates and details.

Reiki Shares support continued skill development, deepen embodied understanding of energy work, and provide space for mutual exchange, presence, and community connection.

Check the Reiki Calendar for upcoming Reiki Shares and class offerings.
